New Expansion for Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Dream-Eaters

Fantasy Flight Games have announced The Dream-Eaters, the next expansion for Arkham Horror: The Card Game to be released in Q3 (July-September) 2019.

A dark game box, containing a dreamer and a spider-like creature

I am fully hype for this one, as it is set in H. P. Lovecraft’s Dreamlands, an alternative dimension/reality that can only be reached through dreams. Many of his most evocative stories explore this dimension, such as the gorgeous vignette Celephaïs and the epic prose-poem The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, which frantically hops from overwrought nonsense to experimental descriptive genius. Suffice it to say that this dreamy region has rich pickings for an adventure that blurs the lines between reality and fiction.

This new expansion begins the fifth cycle of Arkham Horror: The Card Game and includes the first 2 scenarios of the cycle. In one scenario, 1–4 players become investigators who venture into the Dreamlands, and in the other scenario they play their companions who have been left in the waking world. The Dream-Eaters set includes a total of 95 scenario cards and 56 player cards, and introduces a new investigator: Luke Robinson, the Dreamer. The full campaign will consist of the 2 scenarios in The Dream Eaters and a further 6 Mythos Packs to be released in the future.

Cards from The Dream-Eaters, including Luke Robinson and a Zoog.

As always, there are a variety of ways to experience the cycle. Each of the 2 scenarios in The Dream-Eaters can be played on their own or in combination with 3 of the 6 Mythos Packs in the cycle to form a 4-part campaign. Or if an epic 8-part campaign is more your thing, these initial 2 scenarios can be combined with all 6 Mythos Packs.

To get you in the mood to dream, here’s a little indicative flavour from Fantasy Flight themselves:

There is a hidden realm beyond the world of the waking, a realm of wonder, imagination, and nightmares. After occult author Virgil Gray writes about his adventures in a place he refers to as the “Dreamlands,” you decide to learn the truth for yourself. But the deeper you fall into your investigation, the more you find yourself questioning: what is real and what is fiction? And what secrets await in the dark, forbidden places beyond the gates of sleep?
